Constructed in 1933, the 23,770-square-foot building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Whoever buys it will have to adhere to a strict historic preservation agreement that limits what can be done with the property and the artwork inside. There are nine original wall murals in the lobby, which were commissioned during the Great Depression as part of the Treasury Relief Arts Project. The oil paintings were done in 1937 by Ray Boynton, with the assistance of local artists Mallette Dean, Suzanne Scheuer, Thomas Hayes, Robert Nurok, Luke Gibney and Milton Anderson. Those murals are the only federally sponsored decorative artwork produced during the Depression in Modesto. They depict agricultural scenes: plowing, sorting and harvesting grapes; irrigating orchards; meat and cheese packing; grain harvesting and feeding cows. (The Modesto Bee)
