The European Commission seems determined to boost privatisation in the water sector by exposing public utilities to ‚competition‘ via tendering. The most recent example is the infringement procedure launched by the Commission against Italian municipalities that jointly organise their public water services in a multi-municipal consortium. This model is also widely used in other countries and the Commission’s move is therefore a serious threat to public water delivery in Europe. Read more
